Headaches And Migraines

Headaches are one of the main reasons people see a doctor. Most people experience headaches regularly, and they affect everyone regardless of gender, race, and age. According to a report by the world health organization, 50% of the adult population will experience a headache in any given year. Headaches can be as a result of a medical condition such as a migraine, stress or emotional distress.  Headaches can affect your quality of life, and in severe cases, they will hinder you from handling your normal daily activities. If you are frequently getting headaches that are not responding to over-the-counter medications, it is important to see a health specialist for further assistance.

Causes of Headaches

Headaches are known to occur in any part of the head, on both sides, or in one specific location. The ache can radiate from a central part and spread to other areas. The pain can be throbbing or dull, sharp, appear gradually or be sudden, last for several days or just a few minutes. Headaches are classified according to how they are. The International Headache Society categorizes headaches as secondary when there is an underlying cause and primary when there is no underlying condition causing the headache.

Primary Headaches

Primary headaches refer to headaches that are considered stand-alone. This means that the headache is not caused by any other condition but by problems associated with structures in the head that are considered sensitive to pain. Such headaches can, therefore, emanate from problems related to muscles, blood vessels, and nerves in the head. The headaches can also be caused by problems in the neck or brain chemical activity changes. Some of the most common primary headaches include migraines, tension headaches, and cluster headaches.

Secondary Headaches

Secondary headaches are part of the symptoms of medical conditions that stimulate the pain sensitive nerves. In simple terms, the headaches can be as a result of another cause. Some of the factors can be brain a tumor, blood clots, brain freeze, concussion, dehydration, glaucoma, influenza, stroke, panic attacks, overuse of pain medication, and alcohol-induced hangovers among many others.

In most cases, headache diagnosis depends on what the patient describes. This includes the location of the pain, pattern, and timing of attacks and the type of pain experienced. Tests are only required when the headaches seem complex, or an underlying condition is suspected.
