Sprains and strains are common injuries affecting ligaments and muscles. These injuries are known to occur mostly when playing sports especially when speed or direction is suddenly changed. They can also occur when you land awkwardly during a fall, or when you collide with a person or an object. Let us briefly look at the two separately to understand what they are all about
A sprain occurs when there is overstretching, twisting or tearing of ligaments resulting from the application of excess force to the joint in question. Ligaments are the strong bands that connect bones in joints. Sprains affect some parts more than others. They mostly affect ankles, waist, thumbs and knees. Symptoms of sprains many include pain around the affected area, bruising, tenderness and swelling, and the inability to use the affected joint since it cannot take weight or pressure. Swelling is commonly seen after the injury though bruising might or might not show up later. Bruising can show up away from the affected area as blood will be seeping along the muscle before it surfaces to the skin.
A strain results from the stretching or tearing of the muscle fibers. This is mostly caused by quick contraction of muscles or stretching beyond limits. Strains are mostly experienced in the back, and legs as lumbar strains and hamstring strain. The most common symptoms of strains include pain in the affected muscle when resting, bruising, redness and swelling. There might also be muscles spasms, which are the painful tight contractions of muscles, weakness, and loss of muscle function.
When To Seek Treatment
Most strains and sprains can be easily treated with home remedies especially if they are minor. However, it is important that you seek medical attention is the pain is severe. If the injured joint or muscle cannot be moved, or the injured limb gives way when you put weight on it, you should see a doctor. You should also see a doctor if the affected area looks crooked, or has unusual bumps or lumps that are not part of the swelling. If the symptoms do not go away in a few days of home treatment, see a medical practitioner
It is possible that you might be severely injured and have a problem bigger than strains and sprains such as a fracture. This is why it is a good idea to see a medical practitioner after such an injury for better assessment.
